Benefits of Walking

Researchers have discovered a “wonder drug” for many of today’s most common medical problems.  This wonder drug has been proven to help treat or prevent diabetes, depression, dementia, breast and colon cancer, high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, obesity, anxiety and osteoporosis.  The wonder drug is called “walking.”  - Dr. Bob Sallis, Kaiser Permanente

Medical professionals acknowledge the health benefits of physical activity and encourage walking as an excellent option for individuals of all ages and health conditions. Many local residents are not aware of the benefits of walking (for both mental and physical health) and of the excellent places to walk in the county.

Walking regularly leads to greater health and happiness:

  • Assists with weight loss
  • Helps improve mood and attitude
  • Helps with mental focus
  • Increases energy and ability to complete tasks
  • Reduces the risk of certain diseases and poor health conditions
  • Strengthens bones, increases muscle tone and flexibility

Walking - the perfect exercise:

  • Affordable (free!)
  • Pleasant and easy to do
  • Flexible and can fit into your schedule in lots of little ways every day
  • Great way to spend time with family, friends, neighbors and coworkers
  • Great options for traveling to work or school (good for your waist, wallet and the world)

Walk more, connect more:

  • Walking is one of the best ways to connect and enjoy time with family and friends
  • By walking together, we get to catch up – whether we walk outside or inside at a gym or mall
  • Invite a friend, your children, spouse or partner on an after-dinner walk, take care of weekend errands with your family on foot or invite neighbors to start a casual walking group
  • Along the way you’ll develop both strong bonds and good memories
